Founding Story
We believe the next generation of the internet will be built by teenagers. We’re giving them the scaffolding to do it.
OpenRockets was founded in 2024 by Neksha DeSilva as a space where young builders, writers, and thinkers could contribute to real-world open source projects — without gatekeeping, without bureaucracy, and without waiting to be “old enough.”
What started as a single initiative quickly expanded into a network of nonprofits, each tackling a different corner of the open internet: a magazine, a social network, a developer community, and more.
Operating from Colombo, Sri Lanka, and recognized in the United States as a 501(c)(3) organization, OpenRockets Foundation serves as the legal and operational home for these projects — providing infrastructure, fiscal access, and community.
